Connect on Social

where I cover just the important bits

Here is a little segment I try and present every month at my local WordPress Meetup which will provide some info and insights on all the awesome things I have come across over the last few weeks. These will include things like:

  • All things WordPress
  • New or Awesome training discovered
  • what is hot at the moment
  • Important or Interesting News for the month
  • Podcast’s or Blogs you should check out

Really Cool Dev Stuff

I recently finished the FREE intro course on WPRIG, created by Morten Rand-Hendrikson (@mor10) over at Linkin Learning. It really is more than just a starter theme but a comprehensive assortment of tools to build a very efficient and performant WordPress theme.

I stumbled across the Postman YouTube channel and found the POST/CON Workshop Webinar for 2018. The focus for a lot web now is API, especially with WordPress and if you work with API’s you need to be using Postman for testing and building. Check out these videos for some great insight into how Postman works.

The JavaScript for WordPress Conference was held in June but that’s OK because all the videos are being posted on YouTube by the event organiser and all-around awesome guy Zac Gordon (@zgordon ). You will find a list of the all the talks held and links to the YouTube videos on the site so check it out.

The next thing coming (officially) to WordPress is Gutenburg and if you want to get into developing with that you should check out this list How to Learn REACT – Best Free Online Resources for Beginners. REACT, of course, being the JavaScript library behind Gutenberg and one the most heavily used frameworks around. There some awesome links to training from Kent C Dodds, Tyler McGinnis and LearnCode.academy, an awesome YouTube channel for developers.

Keeping the JavaScript theme going I recently discovered this fantastic newsletter JSK. You will get a weekly feed of all the JavaScript hand picked by experienced developers.

Going a little deeper into PHP development I found an article by @DevelopmentMatt (Matt Sparks) on building your own PHP Framework. This, of course, is not for production but to learn the fundamentals of what goes into a PHP Framework. Another great guide I have discovered is by Frederick Vanbrabant, Building a PHP Framework.

WordPress Admin/User Goodness

One of the most important aspects of WordPress development is the “the Loop” and this article from WPShout Understanding The Loop: WordPress’s Way of Showing Posts is great all-around look at how it works. It’s mostly in plain English also so even if you are not a developer it’s a great read.

An awesome site for all things WordPress is Kinsta. Here a great article on website usability, “The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide on Website Usability Testing

WordPress.TV has released a tonne of new videos recently from WordCamp Europe 2018, WordCamp Miami 2018 and WordCamp Pittsburg 2017. Make sure to check out talks from Bobby Bryant on JavaScript and REACT as well as a must watch talk from Christie Chirinos on Financial Forecasting for WordPress Product Businesses.

My Personal Growth and Wellbeing Bits

An absolute must for anyone who works a desk all day is OfficeYoga.tv with Zac SacBe. I have been feeling so fantastic and ready to go after completing each session.

Next book to read will be this awesome number “WHERE’S MY F**KING UNICORN – A guide to life, your unicorn & everything

The current audiobook, from audible, well 2 actually is “12 Rules for Life – An Antidote to Chaos” and “The Ultimate Brian Tracy Library

For you gamers out there you can check out my attempt at shout casting my favourite streamer Naysy playing PUBG Custom games on YouTube

About Mr Wilde

Technology has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. Started with Dick Smith kits when I was 10, I was making FM wireless bugs in high school. After several years working, Electronics Technician, Sound and Lighting Technical Director and then IT Sysadmin, I am going with the flow and leaving the hardware behind, mostly. I am now developing solutions for the cloud, focus on WordPress, SharePoint and Mobile devices. Learning more and more every day.
